While on an Arctic exploration, Amundsen's ship, the Maud, was disabled by a broken propeller off the Siberian coast. He requested assistance from Captain Claude S. Cochran on the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Bear. Godfred Hansen was born in Copenhagen in February 1876. He served a s am ember of the Norwegian Northwest Passage Expedition, 1903-1906 (leader Roald Amundsen) which saw expedition ship Gjøa become the first vessel to successfully navigate a passage. Hansen returned to the Arctic in 1919 when he was placed in charge of the expedition which sought out deposits for Amundsen's North Pole expedition.
